FLORENCE

and group alike, throwing itself into the action of the narrative, full of an innate
force, inescapably compelling, which captures all the senses and makes them
respond to the rhythm of such poetry. This power is not conscious of the frame
as a cramping boundary, either on the wall-surface or on the sheet of paper,
but only feels that a field has been marked out for it, a space offered in which
to exercise itself. The possessor of such power knows no external constraint,
only the one elemental impulse to fill the prescribed area to the limits with the
rhythm of passion and exaltation. This power made of Raphael the monu-
mental painter, in these drawings already, even without a wall to paint on! The
miracle of the First Stanza is consummated between Raphael and the Pope,
those two mighty poles of force, like a great natural phenomenon.
