CATALOGUE RAISONNE
Madonna del Divino Amore. Naples, Museo Nazionale. Design and execution
by Penni.
(1) Cartoon by him at Naples; fragment of another cartoon in London, British
Museum. (2) Red chalk drawing for the St. Joseph (inspired by the statue of
Aeschines), Vienna, Albertina, probably by Penni (R.Z-, VIII, text, fig. 303).
The Visitation. Madrid, Prado. (Gronau, 173.) Composition from older
motives of Raphael and execution by Penni.
The youthful John the Baptist in the Wilderness. Florence, Uffizi. Probably
after Raphael’s design by Penni.
The Loggie. Vatican. Architectural decoration composed by Raphael.
The only original works by his own hand among the paintings are a
few lozenges in the first vault with Cherubim and Seraphim. After his
design probably the figures of the Almighty in the Story of the Creation,
God appearing to Isaac, Jacob's Ladder, Joseph's Dream, Moses on Sinai.
The execution by Giulio Romano, Penni, Perino del Vaga, and
Polidoro. The drawings are by Giulio and Penni; occasionally—
e.g. in Jacob's Ladder—over a preliminary drawing by Raphael.
The Transfiguration. Rome, Vatican. (Gronau, 202.) The design certainly
by Raphael alone, but the preparatory work for the execution left to
pupils, particularly Penni: red chalk sketch with nudes for the upper
part, Chatsworth. A number of intermediate cartoons for the heads
below partly on the base of the cartoon-tracings by Penni (Chatsworth,
Vienna); also the nude drawings for the groups below (Vienna, Milan,
Chatsworth). The retouched head of Andrew, and the heads of the
old and young Apostle in the centre, drawn by Raphael himself. In
the picture, Elijah and Moses with clouds behind them, the Apostles
on Tabor, the heads and figures of Andrew in the foreground on the
left and of the old Apostle in the centre may also be recognised as by
his hand; the others executed by Giulio Romano and (mostly) by
Penni. The head of Christ, obviously not quite finished, completed by
Penni.
Sala di Constantino (Sala dei Papi). The idea of dividing the walls by intro-
ducing figures enthroned and tapestries is perhaps still owed to Raphael.
In the composition, not to speak of the execution, there is no longer
any trace of his work, but that of Giulio Romano and Penni.
