92. WHEEL LOCK CARABINE. Stock in fruit-tree wood, richly inlaid with steel filigree work. The part
of the stock below the barrel carved with laurel leaf pattern. Octagonal barrel with date 1690. The lock
is blued steel, wheel-box and mounts in chiselled and gilt bronze.

93. WHEEL LOCK RIFLED GUN. Stock in walnut, richly inlaid with steel filigree ornaments and steel
plaques in shape of stags. Below the barrel the stock is carved in water-wave pattern, in the style of the
Dutch picture frames of that period. The barrel is octagonal, dated 1670, and signed by Röder.
The mark: I. H. J. above blacksmith hammering is stamped into it. The lock is in blued steel
and dated the same as the barrel. Wheel-box covered with engraved and gilt bronze plate.
Bavaria or Holland. Length 125 cms.
94. FLINT LOCK REPEATING GUN. Stock in walnut. It is decorated in Dutch lacquer with “Chinoi-
series” and Louis XIV ornaments. The octagonal barrel is deeply engraved with baroque designs and
flowers. Lock, butt-cap and counterplate engraved with ornaments corresponding. (This gun is an espe-
cially interesting example of gun-craftmanship, constructed with the same intentions as No. 43.) The
balls and the powder are introduced by moving a lever which works the bronze-cone inside the lock box.
The powder for loosening the shot is provided automatically out of a small recipient connected with
the pan.
Holland about 1700. Length ill cms.
95. WHEEL LOCK RIFLED GUN. Walnut stock, at the butt and at the middle part richly inlaid with
steel ornaments, filigree work, representing a fox and a stag. The part carrying the barrel is carved in
water-wave pattern in the style of the Dutch picture frames of that period. Barrel octagonal, dated 1660
and marked with: armoured arm holding a sword. The lock in blued steel, is dated and marked the
same as the barrel. Wheel box and lock mounts in gilt bronze.

barrel engraved with ornaments and the inscription: Johannes Wollfard, Sallfeld 1685. Lock engraved
with flower garlands and game. On the trigger-guard three crosses.

the Saxon coat of arms, stamped into it.

barrel is in blued steel and inscribed: Christian Ernst Herrmann in Wildenfels. The lock richly engraved
with stag- and bear-hunting scenes of beautiful design.

99. WHEEL LOCK RIFLED GUN by Röder. Stock in walnut, carved in parts. On the left side of the butt
a brass plate, engraved with huntsman on horseback, surrounded by trophies. The octagonal barrel is
inlaid with three decorated brass plates and the mark: C. R. over flower cluster. Above this the ins-
cription on brass: “Des Morgens früh gar stolz, geht der edle Hirsch zu Holz.” (“The noble stag
at break of day / Goes proudly to the woods away.”) The engraving on the lock depicts the bomb-
arding of a town.
