68 LECTURE ON EGYPT.
certainly crossed the line of the new Suez Canal
between Port Said and Suez, but it would be foreign
to the object of this lecture to enter into a controversy
as to the exact point of crossing. The name of Moses
is intimately associated with Egypt, for there he was
born, and rescued in a romantic manner by Pharaoh's
daughter. He was educated at On, now called Heli-
opolis, where he became learned in all the wisdom of
the Egyptians. Of this famous city there remain but a
single obelisk and a few mounds of rubbish, though for
more than a thousand years it was the centre of learning,
and the spot where not only Moses, but Euclid, Plato,
Herodotus and other distinguished men of science and
learning were trained. It is certain that Moses and his
fellow students must have seen at On the obelisk now
standing on the Thames Embankment, but the back-
ground of the picture as he saw it was made up of the
green valley of the Nile, the distant pyramids, and the
still more remote mountains of the Libyan desert: a
great contrast to the turbid river, the dirty buildings,
and murky atmosphere of London.
You will remember we are told in the Gospels how
Joseph and Mary, being warned by God in a dream,
took the infant Jesus by night into Egypt. Numerous
other allusions to Egypt will be found in the Old
and New Testaments ; time, however, will not permit
of further reference to them or to many other interest-
ing points.
If I have succeeded in awakening your interest in
this most ancient and mysterious country, the object of
my lecture will be amply attained.
