PALMYRA AND THE REGION OF THE HAURAN

33

Five minutes after reaching the outskirts we came upon our haif-pitched camp in a
level, stony held within the city limits but outside of the thickly settled portion. We
were near the clock-tower, which was then being built. A throng quickly surrounded
our tents, but the police soon arrived and drove them back. In spite of the cold, we
preferred to stay in camp rather than go to one of the primitive hostelries. In a little
while we paid our respects to the American consular agent and to Mr. William
Christie, the Scottish missionary, to whom we had a letter of introduction. We
rode through the business quarter, with its tangle of dark and slippery streets and
alleys. During the evening's work we kept ourselves warm by huddling around the
large brazier which is ordinarily used to heat the oven. Before morning the ther-
mometer registered 29)^° Fahrenheit, an unusual temperature in that region.
