PALMYRA AND THE REGION OF THE HAURAN

49

was forcibly brought to our attention when we approached the Dog river, not far
from Beirut. It was found that the steel railway bridge and the modern French
highway bridge had both been destroyed, so that we found it necessary to go up
stream and cross by the triple-arch structure built by the Romans and remade in
medieval times, which had withstood the force of the torrent.
Thus we returned to headquarters in order to escape the great difficulties of the
rainy season in the interior of the country. It would have been useless to attempt to
continue our work and our journey during the succeeding two months. From the
19th of December to the 1st of March, therefore, the members of the party separated
in order to visit other lands or to accomplish certain tasks that it was necessary to
fulfil.
During the two months of the autumn's journey we were in the saddle 175 hours
and the distance covered amounted to about 670 miles. Some days we remained in
camp, in the ruins, or in the town in which we happened to be stopping; at other times
we went only short distances. Out of the total of fifty-seven days, forty-six were spent,
at least in part, in travel. We encamped in twenty-one different places, stayed five
nights all told in four different native houses, and spent five nights in hotels or public
during the time that we were away from Beirut.
