instrument which would locate gold in the ground and spirit it away to any point
we desired. The ruins here, just as in Selemiyeh and elsewhere, are being rapidly
destroyed. We noticed particularly that certain sarcophagi and tombs near Hass
were being cut to pieces.
The largest and best preserved of all the ruins near our temporary headquarters is
Khirbit Hass. The of Hass informed us that
Shinsharah was thought by the natives to be the ancient
name of the ruin. The walls of the buildings stand out
prominently above the hills, and some of them are in
almost perfect condition.
On the 24th the camp was moved from Hass to il-
Barah, a village about eight miles to the northwest. It
is on the opposite side of a gully from Kefr il-Barah,
the most extensive group of ruins visited by the Expedi-
tion thus far. Some of its tombs and ruins of churches
are in a good state of preservation, but for the most part
the stones are strewn about in great confusion. Another
notable ruined town not far from our camping-place is Serdjilla. There we visited
a number of buildings, all of them in a remarkable condition. The public baths and
a house near by with a two-storied colonnade, which had evidently been a wine-shop,

were published by M. de Vogiied A beautiful mosaic formed the door of the main room
of the baths. It had an elaborate design and in the center was a long Greek inscription.^
