ADDENDA.

serve, that the colours imitated in the first table, only take one point of colour
(the highest) ; besides which there are many gradations both before and after
they mix with the next: thus yellow, from the' brightest degree, graduates
lower, till it mixes with the orange; and the orange in the same manner till
it mixes with the red, and so on. In like manner I shall aim at arranging the
different pigments, there being various gradations of them that will fall in
between the first and second table, and some beyond it. I shall put them
down by name, in the order they appear to me to stand, without troubling my
readers with the detail of each experiment: but as I have not all the'colours
by me which the shops afford, I cannot make so extensive experiments as I
otherwise should; nevertheless I hope I have done sufficient to prove my
sincere wish to make this little -work as useful as I can, for the mode of trial
mentioned, will enable persons to satisfy themselves in a fuller manner
than is in my power to do at present; and I flatter myself if the theory beap-.
proved, this addition will make it easy to follow, as it will enable practitioners
to arrange their own colours (the first step to be taken), and next explain an
exact and methodical use of them; for promiscuous use can only produce
confusion, instead of a certainty of effect,
