WOODCUTS OF THE 15th CENTURY.
1. THE EARLIEST BLOCKBOOK-WOODCUT WITH XYLO-
GRAPHIC TEXT WITH THE ENGRAVED DATE OF PRODUCTION.
A WOODCUT WITH XYLOGRAPHIC TEXT DATED 1466.
The Hand with the Mirror of Salvation of 1466.
Schreiber 1859.
Produced in Suabia (Germany).
The end of the xylographic inscription at the bottom reads thus:
“Sactum anno (made in the year 1466).
Colours:- Red, crimson, green, yellow, lilac.
Watermark:- Gothic P. ^rs- 22,500.
Size: High 39.2 cm, Large 27.3 cm.
In the middle of the woodcut a great hand, the fingers with inscriptions, from the
tip of each finger scrolls are starting with inscriptions. In the left upper corner IKaria
Hlagbaleua with the chrismatory. On the right of the hand IHaria IHartfja with the censer
and the aspergillum. On the top of the print is a xylographic inscription of three
lines quoting passages from the Bible.
On the right and on the left of the wrist 5 xylographic lines on every side

Si vere boles, confitearis
Si coufessus es, satisfac
at the left:
When thou knowest the will of the Lord
Then own the faults in order to avoid them
When thou hast done evil then repent of it
When thou verily repentest then confess it
When thou hast confessed then do penance.

at the right:
The thumb significates the God’s will
The forefinger significates the examination
The middle-finger significates the repentance
The ring-finger significates the confession
The ear-finger significates the satisfaction.
On the bottom of the print seven lines in Xylographic beginning:- Ijec menus
