mark on title and numerous small woodcut initials. Limp vellum. 200.—
A very interesting early Italian ciphering book dealing with all kinds of commercial
arithmetic. It is a book destined for daily use, a fact proved by the arrangement ot
printing. At the top of each page there are scales of rates for gold, silver, soap, wax, wool,
bread, silk, fish, oil, ginger, etc. and the rest of the page, about two thirds, is left free from printing
for MS.-entries. At the beginning is a table of abbreviations for coins, weights and measures used at
Venice, then follow tables of multiplication, division and the rule of proportion. Of high interest also
are the quotations of the exchange, among which are given also the relations of sterling to
the Italian Currencies.
On title-leaf an old ownership entry, but in very good condition.
