teaching. It is intended as an aid in memorising the various chapters of the
Gospels, and contains therefore, very curious woodcuts each with rhymed ex-
planations.
This “Ars memorandi” is indeed an enlarged and corrected form of the
xylographicum with the same title. It is here preceded by some verses by Seba-
stian Brant and is edited by Georg Simler.
The Gospel of S. John is represented in 3 cuts, that of S. Matthew in 5>
that of S. Mark in 3 and that of S. Lucas in 4 cuts. The style of these cuts is
admirable and, according to Hagelstange (op. cit.), suggests a connection with
the school of Schongauer. They are possibly by Anshelm himself who was
also a woodcutter.
Ours is the first edition of the “Rationarium” which was, in a smaller form,
first published in 1502 under the title “Memorabiles evangelistarum figurae”.
Of the .greatest importance regarding the history of symbolics.
A very fine and large copy; the upper part of the title-line has not come
up. A small stain on the title-leaf.
See reproduction, page 117.

This nicely printed elegy about the death of Ludwig VI, Electoral of Palatine is one of the
earliest Amberg imprints. Deschamp mentions a book of 1571 printed at that town as first one,

graphic title. Old Spanish brown calf, finely blind stamped with

Palau VI, 490. Salva 4001. Lyell, Early Book Illustration in Spain, 90
The esteemed second edition of Seneca in Spain. It is much
rarer than the first one.
The translation was done by Alonso de Cartagena on request of King
Juan II of Castilia,
On the title is a cut showing a man seated in a monastic scriptorium, at
a table, engaged in writing, while on the wall in front of him is a shelf with an
open book. Below of this cut, is the large xylographic title.
This beautiful and large copy is in its original armorial binding,
bound for Pedro Alvarez de Osorio, Marquez de Astorga.
See reproduction, page 119 and plate XIX.
