Alois Müller has embellished numerous rooms of different
descriptions in Munich and elsewhere, also altars and
altar niches with his paintings, in what ever style yet
always characteristic; our age so plentiful in addresses
of honour offered the artist ample opportunity to make
known his knowledge of old parchment paintings in his
own works of a similar character and at the same time
to.try his talent on the Covers for such like documents.
The ability he also here displayed soon procured his
works in cut leather a name, so for instance upon the
occasion of the 70,h birthday of the Prince Regent Luit-
pold of Bavaria, he had three such Covers to execute;
unique among Müllers' works is an imperial equipment
of gilt leather made to order of the painter Prof. Gabriel
Max. — As the mountings for such address Covers are
the artists' own work, he therefore comes in contact
with goldsmiths' work, and also in this branch he has
made many things especially in jewels, all original articles
showing fresh genial artistic power (illustr. 66 and 67).
The cover represented on Plate 22 about half the
size contains the address of the Circuit of Lower Bavaria
on the occasion of the 70,h birthday of the Prince Regent
Luitpold of Bavaria, as the inscription on the cover states;
the edge shows the natural brown colour of the leather,
the middle portion is enlivened parthy by gilt and colours.

Decorated Room Lower-German.

By Heinrich Sauermann, Flensburg.

Every one who has visited the Munich Art Industrial
Exhibition in the year 1888 remembers with pleasure
the East Frisian Room by the Art Cabinet maker Sauer-
mann; the cosy room entirely fitted out with wood panel-
ling in simple but charming Ornament, obtained unalloyed
approbation from all visitors. A similar room, but on a
larger scale and of richer workmanship Sauermann has
executed, from his own designs with the apprentices of
the Workshop and Artificers School in Flensburg (directed
by him), for the Columbian Worlds Fair. — He shows
in his designs a pure and at the same time highly ori-
ginal representation of old dwelling-room types together
with all their details as they are to be found there, from
the earliest years, in those regions north of the Harz Hills
to be Danish boundaries, but more especially in Schleswig-
Holstein and as they may have developed in the course
of centuries with the Frise, Lower Saxon and chief in-
habitants of these regions. — In the decoration of the
rooms exhibited therefore, old German motives (entwined
circles) as well as gothic and later Ornament are employed
and worked into a general harmonius effect. The wood
work of the walls, ceiling, floor, as well as the furniture
is of dark toned oak, which is enlivened by a few colours
(blue, red, light yellow, green) the upper part of the wall
is covered with a greyish yellow and dark-blue figured
stuff (see Plate 46). Our drawing gives an inside view
in the bow-window which with its strong Supports, its
sloping wood ceiling, its cupboards and chests reminds
