Bom at Huta Miastkowska, district of Garwolin, in 1852 — Died in Warsaw in 1936
In the years 1869-1873 he studied painting in the Warsaw Class of Drawing under Wojciech
Gerson. He continued his education at the Munich Academy under Alexander Wagner
(1875-1877) and in the Cracow School of Fine Arts under Jan Matejko (1877-1879). He spent
the period of years 1881 -1883 in Warsaw and 1885-1894 mainly in the Ukraine. In 1895 he was
appointed a professor in the School of Fine Arts in Cracow, which position he held until 1911,
living in Cracow until 1929, when he moved to Poznan. In 1934 he became a graphics professor
at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts. He undertook several artistic travels, among others to Paris,
Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and England. He was a co- founder of the Society of Polish Artists
“Art”.
He worked in the oil technique and after 1900 chiefly in pastels and water-colours. His production
embraced landscapes, genre scenes, portraits and still lifes. Since the beginning of the 20th
century he started practising graphics, which towards the end of his life became the main field of
his creativity and in which he was, beside Pankiewicz, the most outstanding Polish artist.
He was also active as a sculptor.
