From the Editor

We offer the Readers the third (and iast) votume of the catalogue
Modern Polish Painting, which covers the coliections kept by the Department
of Modern Poiish Painting and Sculpture in the National Museum in Cracow.
Its Part 1 - Poiish Painting o/ the if 9^ Century - was issued in 2001, while
Part 2 - Poiish Painting /rom around 1<$90 to 1945 - had appeared already
in 1997/1998. The present Part 3 describes the works produced after the year
1945.
The rules followed during the preparation of the catalogue, amply ex-
plained in the introduction to Part 2, are binding also for this volume. Most
importantly, the creative output of one author could not be divided between two
volumes, works are mentioned according to the alphabetical order of the artists'
names and chronologically for the artistic output of each creator, catalogue notes
contain only basic data and compositions painted on the reverses of main works
are also listed. The principles followed while presenting illustrations have also
remained the same - each item is accompanied by a small black-and-white
reproduction; the selection of the most outstanding works, made by the authors
of the catalogue, appears as a set of colour photographs in a larger format. Like
the previous volumes, Part 3 includes the index of the persons portrayed and
the index of the donors. The authors of particular notes are indicated by their
initials: SK (Stefania Kozakowska) and BM (Barbara Malkiewicz).
Swiatoslaw Lenartowicz has drawn a short summary of the collection's
history and its characteristics. Such text, missing in Part 1, will be added to
it in the second edition. Also Part 2 awaits its second, amended and com-
pleted edition - we intend to prepare it for print in 2005. At the same time
we should issue the catalogue of the sculpture collection gathered in the
same Department.
1 have mentioned the second editions of the previous volumes. The
need for them has arisen due to the progress in research, uninterruptedly con-
ducted in the Department, as well as the appearance of several publications from
the field of modern Polish painting, which all contribute to the verification of the
data. To a degree, the reason for the elaboration of the successive edition of the
previous volumes is also the acquisition of new objects. This, sooner or later,
