FROM THE EDITOR

wiH also lead to the second edition of the present volume. 1 hope that -
against all problems - our Museum will continue to enrich its collection by
adding to it the objects of the most recent art.
This new kind of artistic creation engenders several problems, both
in the way of exhibiting and of describing more recent works. More and
more often we are faced with the sheer idea of the work rather than a
definite, material realization. On several occasions also the complex tech-
niques applied by the artists preclude a traditional description of the object.
The policy of gathering items of contemporary art in the National Mu-
seum in Cracow, launched by my predecessors and continued by me and my
successors, has centred on acquiring works of art, that is materialized concep-
tions, endowed with a concrete artistic form, which - in our opinion - has always
constituted the essence of art. It might happen, however, that the 2IT century
will oblige us to verify such an approach to artistic creation and, consequently,
the principles of enlarging the collection.
Yet, before this happens, today we present to your attention a cata-
logue of "traditional compositions.
