The martial law, introduced in Poland on the night of
12/13 December 1981 by the authorities of the Polish
People's Republic, confirmed by the decree of the State
Council and administered by the newly created Military
Council of National Rescue, headed by General Wojciech
Jaruzelski, was officially motivated by the threat of the
coup by "enemy forces" gathered in "Solidarity". Over
five thousand persons were interned, the activity of many
public organizations and trade unions was suspended,
correspondence and telephone conversations were
controlled and censored. Strikes were stifled by the
ZOMO (militia) and the army, and various repressions
were used. The martial law was suspended on 2H
December 1982 and repealed on 22^ July 1983, but
a part of the repressive legislation remained in force.
