At first he studied taw in St. Petersburg, in 1918 he started his education in the Varsovian Schoot
of Ptastic Arts, to continue it (in the years 1923-1924) at the Cracow Academy of Fine Arts in
Jozef Pankiewicz's studio. Together with other members of the Parisian Committee he went to
Paris in 1924 - he stayed there untit 1931. Having returned to Potand, he took an active part in
Potish artistic tife. tn 1939, drafted as a reserve officer, he was taken prisoner by the Red Army
and interned first in the Starobietsk camp and then in the Pavtistchev Bor and Griazoviets camps.
Having joined the Polish Army in the Soviet Union, he first participated in the search for the
imprisoned Potish officers and then organized cutturat tife. After the war he settled down at Maisons-
Laffitte near Paris, where he cooperated in the creation of the monthly "Kuttura". He published
The Starobietsk Memoirs and On the Inhuman Land, essays on art: Oko, Tumult i widma,
Patrzqc, Proust contre la decheance, Swoboda tajemna.
He painted landscapes, still lifes, characteristically framed interiors, and - rarely - portraits; he
found subjects in the down-to-earth grey everyday life, filled with a gloomy grotesque, sometimes
a silent tragedy.
