He studied at the Cracow Academy of Fine Arts between 1934 and 1939, at first under Wladyslaw
Jarocki and Jozef Pienkowski, and from 1937 under Karol Frycz. In 1942 he founded the "Under-
ground Theatre" in Cracow, and in 1945 the Group of Young Plastic Artists. He co-organized the
Cracow Group, reactivated in 1957.
A painter, graphic artist, stage designer and director, theoretician of art, and founder of the "Cricot
2" Theatre. He was one of the most famous Polish artists-innovators of the 20th c. From surreal-
ism he passed towards the in/ormet painting; he practiced the embahage and multipart. He
organized happenings (mainly in the 1960s), while in the 1980s he focused his attention on the
"Cricot 2" Theatre; after the mid 1980s he created canvases based on expressive experiences of
the "closed theatre".
