During the war he was a prisoner of the Auschwitz and Buchenwald camps. In the years 1948-
1953 he studied at the Cracovian Academy of Fine Arts (diploma in 1953). In the period 1963-
1969 he directed the "Ludowy" Theatre in Nowa Huta (Cracow); from 1971 he directed the
Theatre of the Art Centre "Studio" in Warsaw; in 1972 he became a professor of the Varsovian
Academy of Fine Arts. In the years 1955-1963 he was a member of the Group "MARG"; he is an
honorary member of the: International Association of Plastic Artists (AIAP) at the UNESCO,
Societe Europeenne de Culture (SEC), Federation Internationale de Resistance (FIR) and Interna-
tional Board of the Auschwitz Museum. He participated, a. o., in the Venice Biennials of Art in
1979 and 1990, and in the Sao Paulo Biennials in 1979 and 1989.
A painter, graphic artist, stage designer, and theatre director inspired by the wartime camp expe-
rience; in his expressive oeuvre he combines painting with the theatre, using "found objects",
degraded things, collages, and photographs.
