About tbe end of our stay at Kasbgbar tbe distant governors
began to arrive, according to custom, witli tbe annual imperial
revenue ancl offerings from tbeir provinces, wliicb tbey always
present in person wben peace prevails. Hyder Beg, tbe Hakim
of Guma, arrived first, and was followed by Niaz Beg of Kboten,
wbo led in a caravan of 450 carnels laclen witb carpets, silks,
cottons, felts, tents, metal clisbes, ancl otber local manufactures;
two “arabas” (carts) eacb carrying 1500 jings (equal to about
1800 pounds) of golcl and silver; two similar cart-loads of “su-
tasb’ ; (superior jade); 150 lecl borses, ancl 500 donkeys laden
witb copper coin otber tlian tbat of Kboten, calculated to repre-
sent about Rs. 40,000 or £4000.

barterecl for tea, and it tbence fincls its way to Cbina. Tbe
rebellion and revolution by wliicb Eastern Turkistan was lost
to Cbina caused an entire stoppage of all trade between tlie two
countries, but latterly it bas been revived by tbe Nogai and
otber Bussian mercbants trading from Almati as a centre witb
Kasbgbar and Kulclja (Ui). Tbus jade is now suppliecl to meet
tbe continuecl Cbinese demand, and Kasbgliar gets clieap Cbina
black tea, whicb is largely consumed tbere. Sbaw mentions tbe
great increase in tbe price of Cliina tea at Kasbgliar during bis
stay tbere in 1868-69, from wbat it was dming tlie Cbinese
rule; but tbe price bas fallen consiclerably since, ancl in tbe
winter of 1873-74 Cbina black tea from Kulclja was selling tbere
at two shillings ancl twopence per pouncl. Indian tea was tben
for tlie first time introduced to tbe Kasbgbar market by a
