ABRIDGED PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION
The first edition of \he History of Garden Art has been out of print for several years. I
hope the book has had the effect I spoke of in my former preface. A new edition
had necessarily to wait till more ordinary economic conditions in Germany made it
possible, and I wish to thank my publisher for taking the first opportunity of bringing
out a second edition.
After mature consideration I have decided to leave the text of the former edition
without fundamental alteration. My intention was to write a bit of history, not to produce
a handbook. An examination of the literature of the last ten years, especially on the
subject of Italian gardens (which has attracted most writers), has proved to me that a
complete alteration of my text is unnecessary.
Of course the text has been examined, in case errors might have crept in. I
was prevented from correcting the proofs myself after the first volume, because I went
to India on a journey that had long been planned. But I know that the corrections of the
second volume were in the best of hands; and I thank Professor Salm and Dr. Gertrud
Bettmann of Heidelberg for their kindness and trouble. Also to my other good friends
who have found me new material I here tender my most hearty thanks.
