and Schöffer’s imprints are more beautiful than the productions of all
later printers, and as the early specimens from Schöffer’s press before
1466 were much more beautiful than all bis later books, with the exception
only of a few missals, so only the very earliest books printed by Petrucci
show the highest perfection. Later he printed quite a number of books
every year and evidently could not longer devote so much care and
time to the typographical execution.
The book here offered is unanimously con-
sidered bis masterwork this second issue being an exact
reprint from the first edition. No early Petrucci book is in existence
of which more than 2 complete copies and one or two fragments are
known to exist. Of the first edition of this book one complete copy
(Treviso) and an incomplete copy (Bologna) exist. Of this second
edition only one other copy (Paris) is known.
The present copy is in absolutely immacu-
late condition and in its beautiful original
binding. It is hardly necessary to say that never
before has a copy of this masterwork of music
printing been offered nor is one likely to be
offered again.
