Pysistratus the (on of Neitor . Menelaus knowing who
were his new Guetfs, after the repast began to relate many
of the events of the life of Ulisses. This relation plunged
Telemachus into extreme grief, and all that were present,
shed tears. Hellen informed of the arrival of thefe Strangers,
was desirous of seeing them and of relating herself to Tele-
machus some circumstances of the life of Ulisses. She sees
with pain how much he is assi&ed by this recital, and for
this reason she mixed drugs with wine, which for at least
twenty four hours rendered every man that should drink of
it, insensible to every impression of afAid ion . She orderd
her female attendant to present a Cup of this wine to Te-
lemachus, while she herself presses him to drink of it. It
is difficult to say, if the man leaning on a stick be Mene-
laus. Telemachus however is dressed according to the de-
scription of Homer () . This curious Vase was found in
the neighbourhood of ancient Capua .
Plate 15. ) When Paris had carried off Hellen , the
Greeks, before they came to a6ticn, sent Ulysses accom-
panied by Menelaus in Embassy to demand Hellen of the
Trojans, as appears in the Ilstad {b).
This plate represents Ulysses and Menelaus arrived
as the house of Antenor, who, as he says himself in the
above cited passage of Homer, received them in his houfe
and rendered them all the services which the laws of holpi-
tality required. On one side you see Ulysses in the ve-
itibule upon the threshold of the door , and behind him
Menelaus in the interiour part of the house is Antenor
who has one foot on the threshold, he is accompanied by
his daughter Crino with a bason , and ewer , which she
is going to present to the Grangers , in orden that they
may
