the skirts of the Bey's camp, wc observed to the West the ruins
of a large town or castle, built on the side of a steep craggy co-
nical rock. The armed Mamalukes who attended us had the
Bey's orders not to let us cross the river, for he could not answer
for our safety beyond the limits of his own encampment; so
that Ave were unable to examine them more closely. The arches
we could discern among the buildings denoted them to be of Sa-
racen construction; and they were probably the remains of a Sa-
racen town, which succeeded to the antient Izijzi, and the name
is no further changed than to that of Klirzi.

The following is the route given in the Itinerary of Antoninus of
the space commonly known by the name of Dodeca Schcenus *.

* The Schcenus was estimated very differently in different parts of Egypt. In the
Delta it was equal to thirty stadia; from Memphis to the Thibaid it WaS ICO stadia;
and between the Thebaid and Syene, 60 stadia. Vid. Strabo, lib. xvii. What it was
valued at above Syene, this geographer does not inform us: but if the distance was
eighty nii'ej accurately, on reckoning 8 stadia to the mile, the 6'40 stadia will brmg
the value of the schcenus to 53 stadia and one third.

| It is very probable that the Greek name of this place may have been given to it,
