head and the horns of Amnion*. On each side of him are four
priests in the posture of adoration with clasped and lifted hands.
A priest is piercing a man with his spear at the foot of Osiris
Amnion, and Isis lunata, i. e. crowned with the globe and lunar
horns, exactly corresponding to the appearance of the new
moon, when under a clear sky the obscure disk is just percepti-
ble. Another priest is dancing with great agility before the
same deity, accompanied by lsis leamata, or with the head of a
lioness. Throe figures, one with the head of Osiris in the human
character, the second disguised as Osiris Amnion, and the third
with a lion's head, are drawing together a large net in which are
caught a quantity of fish anil waterfowl, and which is fastened
at the other end to the sceptre of Jsis. A crocodile is seated on
an altar, viewing a table placed before him covered with fruits
and other delicacies, while a priest is on his knees and presenting
him a crux ansata, a sistrum, and the sceptre of Osiris. The
best piece of sculpture is a man sitting on a horse in full speed,
in the attitude and nearly with the spirit of the Marcus A melius
at Rome—it is among s.ome small hieroglyphical writings on one
of the pillars. A priest is presenting offerings to a procession of
four rams each with the horns of Ammon. In a group of mon-
sters is a lion with the head of a crocodile and the fore part of
a serpent for his tail. In one place Osiris is seen with the head
of an Ibis, and above is the crescent and dark disk of the moon.
There is also a serpent with two female heads, and a tree grow-
ing out of its back.

The cieling of this portico is replete with mysterious represen-
tations; and from the multitude of stars which surround some of
the figures in it, the boats in which arc seated the most mystical
