It may, however, be imagined that Herodotus, in mentioning these twelve
arourae of which each of the military were by right possessed, alluded only
to that portion of land of which they were exclusive proprietors, while the
whole body of the military was besides, as Diodorus states, entitled to a
full third of the produce of the rest of the soil.
Under the present arrangement, each village is divided into twenty-four
carats, or shares ; and at certain periods of the year a calculation is made of
the whole annual produce which has been supplied by the labour of the
peasant, and can be spared from his scanty maintenance. This is divided
into portions, consisting each of so many carats, or twenty-fourth parts, of
the whole; one or more portion (according to the custom of the place) is
allotted to religious establishments ; another part to the government, or those
appointed to receive it; and another to the Muktesims, or proprietors, per-
haps the legitimate descendants of trie antient military bodies. In this ar-
rangement may be traced very nearly the old constitution of the country.
The property of the peasant is of a secondary nature, alienable indeed by
permission of the Muktesim, but hardly ever capable of improvement
But besides this share of the produce to which the Muktesims are entitled,
they frequently possess distinct portions of the village—two, three or more
carats—the proceeds of which are exclusively theirs. In this light may be
considered the twelve aroune belonging to the soldiers under the antient
government.
