escort of the Ababde Arabs, consists in an exchange of Venetian glass-
ware, cloths, shawls, various implements and household utensils, grain of
different kinds, for ivory, ostrich feathers, gums, male and female slaves,
camels, and charcoal.
To Es Souan the same Arabs and those of the Bichare tribe annually bring
large quantities of senna, which they have gathered among the mountains,
which in this latitude separate the Nile from the Red Sea. The plant grows
on them naturally : it is cut soon after the fruit has appeared; and when let
to dry in the sun during two or three days it is carried to Es Souan, and
thence conveyed down the river to Cairo. About eight hundred quintals are
exported annually from the neighbourhood of the Cataracts, at the price of
from fifteen to sixteen pataques each.
The trade of Goubanich, which is a few miles below Es Souan, consists
in the fitting out annually a caravan of fifty camels for the purpose of pro-
curing alum from a low spot in the Desert, ten or eleven days journey South-
West of the Cataracts. It is found in a single stratum, varying from two-to
fifteen inches in depth, covered with a layer of dry sand about half a foot
thick, and resting on a bed of moist sand. The alum when taken is broken
in pieces, dried in the sun, and at Goubanich it is sold at seven pataques the
ardeb.
