TURKISH DINNER.

89

Ascanius to his parent: "Hens, etiam rnensas consumimus."
It is the usual practice of the Turks to place before each
guest a large flat piece of soft bread or biscuit, scarcely
baked, and doubled up like a napkin, to be used as a plate,
from which he is constantly tearing off small pieces, which
are held doubled between the finger and thumb, in order to
take up such mouthfuls of cream, or honey, or pilaff, as
they are unable to hold between their unassisted fingers.
