TEMPLE OF HERCULES

This view is taken from the eastern side of the temple. In front is
a small altar, which was surrounded by eight Doric columns of tufo,
ten inches in diameter; on the right is a \small enclosure, supposed
to have been used for confining the victims; on the western side, at
a little distance from the temple, is a small semicircular seat orna-
mented with lion's claws, in tufo, similar to those in" view No. IV.
