PLATE XLIII.

CHARON AT THE GRAVE.

Design from a Lekythos in the Berlin Museum. Cat. II. 268. H. 0*535.
Plate from Archaologische Zeitung, 1885. Taf. 3.

Subject: Charon in his boat, the lines of which have disappeared, approaches the stele,
and stretches out his hand to receive the offerings of pomegranates brought to the
dead by a maiden. Beneath are piled large gourds, and the tall reeds to the right
indicate the pool of Styx. A second maiden stands to the right in a dress covered
with ivy pattern.

Polychrome on a white ground.
