sion. -hist as Mr. Rowbotham's highly practical little
treatise "The Art of Sketching from Nature/' directs the
Studenf8 pre-supposed facility in the use of Black-and-
white to the production of Sketches in that medium, but
leaves Colour untouched, so does the present work seek to
extend to .Sketching out of doors the knowledge necessarily
acquired in copying pictures in Water-Colours; while, by
avoiding what is unnecessary to the Sketch, however essen-
tial to the finished picture, it points out the shortest and
most direct course to the attainment of the desired object.

Should the writer succeed in facilitating in any degree
the delightful study of Nature, he will feel that he has not
laboured in vain.
