a Woman. His Sex renders.it impoffi
ble. To imagine otherwife, is cither to
be very little acquainted with the Na
turc, and Feelings of a Man—or yen
ignorant of'what paries on filch Occafi
ons. Let fome Men-Mdwives pretem
what they will, certain Freedoms mutt

produce certain Ccnfequences-till the

Nature of Things change—and natural
caufes ceafe to produce natural EffcEls
I Ipeak of that Circumftanee, in this
Chapter, only as it may afTeft the Wo-
man's fafety.

If a Woman lay in imminent Danger,

indeed--owing to her being unh; ppi

]y one of the very few who require a
Man-Midwife—the Man's thoughts

-uniefs he were Wcrfe than human,

would be fo entirely engrofled by the
poor Woman's great Danger, as to leave
no Time—no Vacancy, lor other Ideas
to enter. In thofe riumberlefs Cafes, on
the contrary, vvherc an experienced Wo-
man ;s fufftcient, it is impoffible but that
a Man's Thoughts muft rove, while
every Fart of a pretty woman is expofed
to his uncontrouled Freedoms—and he
knows at the fame Time that Jbe ts in nc
Danger—and that a Woman could hav<
done as well, if his fair Patient had haa
Wledefly enough to induce her to employ
one.

But Men-Midwivcs, in general,* pre-
tend that the Situation in which Women
then are, prevents the Difference cf their
Sex being capable of producing it's natu-
ral Effects on their Thoughts and Faffi
ons. They pretend, too, that the Num
btr of Women wro pais through their
Hands, tends likewile to render them
inienlible.

Now—with refpect to the firft—the
Pretence can impole on none who are
the leaft informed on the Subject. Wo-
men arc very irequcntly in what may be
termed Labour, for a Day or two before
the Birth, and 'pcrnaps more—and yet,
jiotwithHanding, are well enough to
\falk about—lit at Table with Company
—in every refpect the fiime as to then
Ptrfms, as they were before the Mid-'

T is impoffible in the very Nature tf Wbat a Situation for a Woman to be in,

Things, that a Man can be as tool as r°r an Hffurl--Ske wds 1H Lahou^
