Midianite reformer himself, I know not: it is, how-
ever, my decided opinion, that the word is really a
proper name, and does not merely mean a " son/'
as it might do if the sign of the proper name were
not appended to it. The word is common enough
as "a son," but never I believe in that signification
has it this sign attached.
Communication. " "Whereas I sent the Captain
Jannes, Captain of the captains, to communicate
with the chieftain, who (viz. the chieftain) said to
us, 'Let each individual of the people be so that
we may speak our prayers for him—the tribes
(i. e., names) with those of the like tribe with it.
Let them obtain that I need not petition (partial
erasures make this passage doubtful); and let (some
proper name) and Maiee of the land of Dag give
them scrolls [from him to them arranged] in writ-
ings of right—according as there had been a mes-
sage sent to say, Let there be our prayers of the
tribes which are under your hand'—and whereas
ye have brought them up, lo now speak not of
your hindering the tribesmen from [a gap]. Ye
may exclaim, 'Lo I cannot enumerate for, thee the
troops of the Midianites, with those who accom-
panied them.' Thou art multiplied, for thou art
among them of right. Art thou not Mosu of the
Semt people? Art thou not a chief? Thou art
brought out as a place of (refuge). Thou art ap-
pointed to transmit the Shuna. Thou hast chro-
nicled their expeditions, praying their patronyms.
