Plate 1.
Fig. o. Front view of the gable-end side of the domus
principalis, now called the mint, near the large tower of the
highly remarkable ancient Kaiserburg (emperor's castle), castel-
turn Seize, Salzburg, in the ancient Salzgau (Salageve) at a
small distance from Neustadt on the Sale , in the former bish-
opric of Wurzburg, Bavaria. This Kaiserburg (emperor's
castle), thoroughly in the byzantine style, but only existing
in partly well preserved ruins, surpasses, as to history and
art, perhaps every other oid castle in Germany; even the
ancient Wartburg is, in this respect, inferior to it it was a
Falatium regium of the franconian kings, where king Phara-
mund, in 420, ordered the four princes of the provinces of
Salageve, Bodogeve, Windogeve, Virogeve to give the cele-
hrated salic law. it was often inhabited by Charles Martel
(-j- 741), grand father of Charlemagne, who used to call this
princely habitation Selz, Seize, Sets; Charlemagne celebrated
here his Faster, in 768, after a glorius victory. A great
many imperial transactions are recorded to have taken place in
this castle, which was in the course of many centuries the
temporary residence of german emperors, and in the eighth
century visited by Boniface, the apostle of the Germans.

was above the chapel to the west, the rosetta below the
wooden staircase leading to the upper rooms of the Rittersaal.
Both ornaments are more ancient than the inscription indica-
tes; they were made long before the tenth century.
Fig. d. Continuous ornament (14&0) of the passage
leading from St Nicholas chapel to the collegiate cb trrh of
Aix La Chappelle, in the times of Herman, Landgrave oi Lease,
archbishop of Cologne, provost of Aix La Chapelle and St.
Geron at Cologne. This interesting ornament is in the style
of the Urach capital.
Plate V.
Decoration in relievo in the Riling of an arch above a
small door of the so called KapeHen-Thurm (chapel-tower)
of the Holy Virgin's church at Rotweil, in the Black-Forest
province, Wurtemberg This beautiful relief, representing a
knight and his bethrothed, damaged in several parts, was, on
account of its beauty, given here in a state of restoration and
a little magnified. The print was made by Mr. Frederic
Wagner, engraver of Nuremberg.
Fig. &. A continuous ornament of the great front portal
of the same tower; this portal is decorated with an abundance
of splendid motives.
Plate VI.

' Plate II.
Eig. a. c. d. e. y. Enlarged capitals of the foregoing
plate, the arched style indicating the 9th century; the whole,
chiefly the gate, was undoubtedly built uuder Charlemagne,
a circumstance which favoured its preservation till it was de-
stroyed by fire.
4-erman (gothic) style.
Plate III.
Fig. a The magnificent St. Sebald's sepulchre after a
drawing on parchment by Veit Stoss, 5 feet high, in the pos-
session of the author of this work, which contributes to
illustrate the character of this celebrated artist and his parti-
cipation in the execution of St Sebald's sepulchre. All the
artists and connoisseurs who examined the works of Peter
Vischer in their different styles and manners, were often led
into error and ascribed many objects to him, which though
bearing his monogramme, were decidedly not execudet by
him. The following may give a correct idea of this much
disputed question.

Fig. a. Ornament on a missal- desk of the principal altar
in the parish church of the Holy Virgin at Pappenheim. Bavaria,
carved in maple-wood; it was formerly in the monastery
church of the Austin friars; 15th cent. Well preserved with
a few exceptions. 16 inch, long by one foot 3 inch, broad.
Fig. 6. Ornament in natural size on a maple-tree jewel
box, exceedingly well carved and furnished with intaglio work.
The ground is azure; eleven inches long by 6 inch. It served
to enclose the Schwanenorden (order of the swan) as may be
concluded from an old painting in the monastery of Heilhronn,
which represents the adoration of the kings, of whom one
is offering the infant Christ a small box from which the child
takes the insignia of the swan order. !n the interior is a
small receptacle for the alms given by the knights. This box,
now in the possession of the author, serves for containing a
few small relics of Albert Durer which were found when the
dwelling of the celebrated painter was restored.
Plate VII.
Portal decoration of the beautiful hospital church of St.
Caiherine in the formerly celebrated imperial city of Esslingen,
Wurtemberg, built by the celebrated architect Mathews Bob-
linger, but much devastated in the year 1815.

Plate IV.
Fig. a. A very interesting capital, found in the year
1841 on the former Furstenburg (princes' castle) now Hohen-
Urach ruin, from the time of count Lewis von Wurtemberg
or of his son, Eberhard im Barte (the bearded), first duke of
Wurtemberg.
This ornament, probably forming part of the Rittersaal
(knights' room) or the castle chapel is of white stone, exqui-
sitely well chiselled and gilt.
Fig. & c. Both these pieces, though belonging to the
Byzantine style, were inserted here, having been taken from the
Wurtemberg curiosities. The first is from the ruins of the
Wurtemberg family castle (See n. 5. pi. 3. fig. d.). The se-
cond, representing the struggle of the Hon with the dragon,

Plate VIII.
Fig. a. Reading desk ornament, in the celebrated Bene-
dictine monastery church of Blaubeuren; of excellent oak-
wood.
Fig. A- A similar ornament of the renowned magnificent
Ulm minster, of the same motives, but twice as rich in deco-
ration. The artist who made both these ornaments is George
Syrlein, who has not been so much estimated as he merited.
This is confirmed by his eminent works in both the ministers
of Blaubeuren and Ulm.
Fig. c & Stone galleries above the choir vault of the
knave in the monastery church of Blaubeuern.
Fig. e /. g. A. Wooden decorations, 3 inch, high, beneath
a window-breastwork in the Nuremberg town-hall which is
rich in beautiful architectural ornaments of the 14th century.
