Fig. u. Tomb of Lewis, count of Thuringia , caiied the
Leaper, in the former ceiebrated Benedictine monastery of
Reinhardsbrunn in Thuringia, 3 teagues from Gotha, at the
foot of the Insetberg, upon the smatt river Horset.
It was not the originat ptan of this work on the Orna-
ments of the middte-ages, to contain the drawings of tombs;
but as in ditferent periods of the middte-ages costumes and
ornaments are met with in combination, and, especiatty tombs
were represented in the ornamentaf and decorative styie, —
further, as the artists of the present time are often compeHed to
represent the figurative and decorative in ciose union for which
purpose they are in need of a correct idea of the ancient mo-
numents of art, I did not hesitate to adopt a pian of pub-
lishing the representations of such iombs which are caicuiated
for the said purpose and which are so universaHy wished for.
The tomb in question, is, we regret, together with severai
others, in the open air near an o!d chape!; butas this is about
to be rep!aced by a church in Byzantine sty!e , the said mo-
numents wi!! be piaced in the interior. This sepu!chra! mo-
nument is vcry tastefu!!y executed in the sty!e of the 11th
century in solid, durabie stone, a !itt!e damaged at the basis,
which bears the fo!!owinginscriptioninvery!egib!echaracters:

This ornament is of the most ancient part of the church,
which is constructed in the o!d German sty!e of the 15th
century.
