Bear Professor V,olf:

Your letter of February 17th reachcd me two days
ago. We had already learned through the German Embassy in
..ashington tha.t your health v:ould not germit you to undertake
the long trip to California and return at this time, 'ihis
was sad news, and we are all exceedingly sorigr, not only
that we shall not see you in California to receive in person
the Bruce Gold Modal of the Astronomien! Society of the
Pacific, and the honorary degyee Doctor of Laws from the
University of California, but especially that you are not
now in the best of health. Professor Leuschner has read
your letter, and I am sending it to Dr. Aitken at Mount
Hamilton for him to pass around to the members of the "old
guard."
