The extremely rare first edition printed in Spain of the Spanish translation,
and much more sought after than the Antverp edition of 1557.
This work is divided into two parts: The historia de Ethiopia contains a full
account of the voyage made by Franc. Alvarez to that country in the eapacity of
secretary to the Ambassador Duarte Galvao (Cf. A. P. Newton’s travels and tra-
vellers in the Middle Ages, p. 183). The present translation was made by Thomas
Badilla from the Portuguese. On folio 66 begins the second part, with separate title,
containing a collection of Jesuit letters from Asia and Brasil. It is the first collection
of its kind, and as such of particular importance. The title reads in translation as
follows:
„Copy of various letters from some Fathers and Brothers of the Order of Jesuits,
received in 1555, of the great marvels which our Lord has accomplished in augmenting
the Holy Catholic faith in the Indies, belonging to the King of Portugal and in the
Kingdom of Japan, and in the land of Brazil. With the description of the various
laws and customs of the people in the grand Kingdom of China, and other lands
recently discovered.“
The woodcut on the title-page represents the Arms of Don Artal de Alagon, Conde
de Sagasta (for reproduction see Vindel, man. gräfico descriptivo del biblidfilo hispano-
americano I, 95).
Our copy is wormed at the right-hand bottom corner of the last 30 leaves, and
there are some wormholes at the beginning and a large one at the inner margin of
some 35 leaves in the middle of the book, but all without affecting the text.
