The first Latin edition. „Laet’s work was the Standard atlas of the
Western hemisphere for nearly a Century and a half. The text embodies the dis-
coveries of Champlain, Lescarbot, Acosta, Hakluyt, Herrera. and others, but its special
value consists in its maps of North America, New England, and New Netherlands,
from which succeeding writers copied. In the map of Virginia we find marked „N.
Amsterdam“, „Manhattan“, „Helle Gat“ etc., one of the earliest appea-
rances of New York and its surroundings in printed maps.“
