Fine complete copy of an exceedingly rare copperplate work of which we are
unable to trace another complete copy to have come into
the market. No copy in the Dresden print-room. The British Museum possesses,
only a copy with 23 plates (information due to the kindness of Mr. C. Dodgson).
The plates illustrate the history of the old Saxons up to 1350 including also many
scenes associated with the history of England (I, 40—45), France (I, 3, 33), Italy (I, 12,
54; II, 28, 29, 31), Scandinavia (I, 26—30; II, 9), Poland (II, 30), and Czechoslovakia
(II, 27). The relations with the tribes populating present-day Belgium are particularly
frequently mentioned. The engravings represent battles, naval engagements, Sieges,
state festivals, banquets, punishments, hunting scenes, etc., and constitute a mine of
information for costume and the military life of the time (arms, armour, toumaments).
The plates are all in fine impressions, measuring about 19 : 27 cm., and have two
columns of printed text and a Latin distich below. The frontispiece to part I is
coloured and mounted. Part of the plates are carefully heightened in gold.
Heinrich Gödig, a native of Brunswick, came to Dresden in 1558, where he was
appointed painter to the Electoral Court. He died at the beginning of the 17th Century.
Andresen devotes 16 pages to the description of the present work.
