(I.) The extremely rare Editio Prrnceps of Luther’s trans-
lat i o n of the Old Testament, embracing the first three parts up to the Pro-
verbs, where Luther stopped working in 1524 (The prophets and Apocalypsp did not
appear till 1532 and 1534 respectively). One of the most coveted treasures of Bible edi-
tions, particularly in this complete state. Uncoloured copy with the blank
leaves at the end of the first part and between leaves 20 and 21 of the second part.
A detailed description of the woodcuts is given by Vögelin and Muther, while all
woodcuts are reproduced in the above named work by Schramm. Dodgson (II, 331/25
and 357/1 States the title-cut of part I to be the work of Lemberger. The other cuts are
closely allied to the Apocalypse, but there is also a possibility of some of them being by
Cranach.
A well preserved copy. A few trifling wormholes at beginning of the first and end
of the second part, some of them running throughout both parts. Third part somewhat
waterstained. Extreme inner margin of first six leaves of first part skilfully repaired,
small repair at lower Inside corner of title of third part. Otherwise the condition of
the book leaves nothing to be desired.
Bound up with the third part is:
(II.) The rare first edition of Emser’s translation of the New
Testament, which was intended to stop the sale in Catholic countries of Luther’s
Bible edition. This translation was published under the patronage of Duke George of
Saxony who in the five-page preface makes a vigorous stand against Luther. The work
contains the nineteen full-page Revelation cuts by L. Cranach, ori-
ginälly used in Luther’s December Testament of 1522. The other
cuts are by Georg Lemberger. A well preserved copy.
This New Testament is in a very fine binding, the gilt ornamentation of which
consists of Renaissance borders and some single stamps in the panel (winged cheru-
bim’s heads, a small rectangular stamp of a soldier, etc.). The roll-produced border on
the back cover (173 : 19 mm.: Venus — head — Chloe — head) is not mentioned by
Haebler (Rollen- u. Plattenstempel), who only registers that type of border in smaller
dimensions (Dresden no. 100). The upper cover bears the following lettering; (above)
Das New Testament; (below) Viti Colensis MDXXXVI.
