The present autograph diary by Karl von Scherzer is the most comprehensive ori-
ginal record in manuscript ever made of the celebrated Austrian „No-
vara“ expedition, in which the author, by Order of the Archduke Ferdinand
Maximilian, took an active part in the capacity of historiographer and
leader of the scientific commission. The great achievements of the
expedition are worldwide known.
No fewer than 140 pages are devoted to Australia and the
South Sea Islands: The islandof Ponape (vol. II p. 271, vol. III p. 1
to 30). — Communications made by a certain native, called Davis, with regard to the
aborigines of the Steward Islands (vol. III p. 42—46). — Sidney (p. 43—76):
The governor Denison, the Universitary, the Observatory, the Botanical Garden. Pro-
spority of the German settlers. Stearine candle manufacture of the German consul

As to Karl V. Scherzer’s career we note that when still a very young man, he
visited almost all countries of Western Europe. In 1852 he started, with Moritz Wagner
as companion, on a voyage to America, where he visited the United States, Central
America and the Westindian Islands. On his return from the Novara expedition Karl
von Scherzer was knighted and appointed to the post of Ministerialrat of the Austrian
Board of Commerce, where he was made chief of the department of commercial
statistico. In 1869 he took part in the Austrian Far East expedition, and was after-
wards consul general at Smyrna, London, Leipzig, and Genoa. In 1896 he retired into
private llfe.
