One of the most important chronicles relating to the
Philippines, China, and Japan. Vol. I and II contain the history of the
Franciscan missionaries in the Philippines from their settlement there up to the year
1741, the third volume is devoted to the Franciscan missions in China and Japan.
According to Retana and other bibliographers the first volume is of the greatest
rarity. It is of high scientifie importance, containing as it does a curious description
of the Archipelago, in which many errors of Colin are corrected and much new
material brought together. The volume deals also with the winds and other matter
of nautieal interest, and is said to have been used by the mariners as a kind of
„Derrotero“, which fact may aecount for ist rarity. — The plate of the third volume
represents the martyr of the 23 Franciscan missionaries in Japan. It is engraved by
Laut. Atlas, Manila 1744.
„The work possesses an American as well as Asiatic Inter-
e s t“, because of the constant shifting of the missionaries from one to another seat
of labour. The names of Mexico, Guatemala, Paraguay etc. are thickly studded
through the pages.“
A very fine clean copy in Contemporary binding.
