PART I

GIOV. BATTISTA PERUZZI DE’ BARTOLELLI
THE son of Tomaso di Bartolello, nicknamed Aofa, of Fano, is mentioned in documents
from 1465 until his death in 1482. The Parma MS. of the Isotteo written by him is dated
1455. Druggist, cartographer, painter, and sculptor, he was also depositario of the
Comune of Fano and superintendent of the fabric of the porto.
The pretty medal described below, with its excellent lettering, recalls the work of
Matteo de’ Pasti (who died in 1467 or 1468); and as the date 1474 on the cartellino is
merely incised, and the subject looks young, the medal may have been made earlier
than that year. The objection to the attribution to Pasti, proposed by Masetti, is thus
removed. Castellani, who was at first inclined to accept Masetti’s attribution, now
suggests that Bartolelli himself may be the author. Another medallist whose influence
is visible is Guacialoti; cp. the nude figures on brackets on his medals of Palmieri and
Estouteville (Pl. 125, no. 742; 126, no. 750). This eclecticism perhaps favours an attribu-
tion to Bartolelli himself; but the good qualities of the medal show that he can have
been no mere amateur.
