Paolo di Campofregoso was doge for the third time from
1483 to 1488. In 1488 for eight years he governed Genoa
for the Duke of Milan. He died in 1498. The piece
illustrated, after Gandolfi, who describes it as being of
copper, was apparently a struck medal, rather than a large
coin.

From the mention of the Emperor, this would appear to
be a coin rather than a medal. In the Rossi Catalogue it
is called a ten-scudi piece, but no weight is stated. Avig-
none thought it a false coin. In the Rossi Catalogue it is
wrongly placed under the earlier Giano (1447-8), but the
style of dress as well as the mention of Maximilian makes
this impossible. II • IDE is an error for III • DE.

As Friedlander, quoted by Furse, observes, this medal
must have been made not in Rhodes but in some other
place; and the style of the ornament points to Northern
Italy, possibly to Milan or to the place to which Carretto
belonged, viz. Genoa.

MEDALLIST OF THE ROMAN EMPERORS
AN unidentified medallist of the last quarter of the fifteenth century, probably in the
neighbourhood of Milan, is responsible for a series of medals of Roman Emperors ; and
the medal of the unknown Marcus Croto is associated with them by its style, lettering,
and the motif of the reverse.
