*""<■* Darjeeling.

Owing to the progressive donunda
tion of forests and'.wood lands in West
Bengal,, by privat owners and their ton-
ants, there has been wide spread soil
erosion with the result that large tracts
of lands ore becoming bare and almost
unproductive. The destruction of forest
cover has not, only . caused a chronic
shortage in the supply of ' timber and
lire wood hut is rendering West Bengal
as a whole more anil more Iiablo to
Hood, drought and heavy land-slides.
The. recent havoc of land-slides particu-
larly in this district is a glaring exam-
ple before our eyes to bo recorded in
the history of Darjeeling which is the
reactions of our total ignorance of the
"great glory of the forests''

I. therefore, nppeal to every citi/.en
in this sub-division to give their fullest
co-operation in the observance of this
Tree Plant ins Week as an annual nat ional
festival and thus make the tree planting
drive a grand success.

I shall be grateful if you would
kindly send mc a report with regard to
the success, of this drive in your locality.
