tliat a worker may be the size of h
queen bee of Apis Indica. They are
over half an inch- long and yellowish brown
ill colour. They build huge pcrpendi
cular single combs of wax ordinarily on
the high branches_pf big trees; or on
the faces of rocks in the hills. Sometimes
their combs are six to seven feet in
length, four to five feet wide and one
and seven-eight lis of an inch thick. A
square inch of surface usually contains
twenty cells and each one is an inch
deep. Workers and drones are reared
in the cells of same size. Rock bees
(Apis-dorsata) stoic plenty of honey, some-
times upto sixty pounds and some wax
is also obtained from the combs. A colony
of these do not stop in the same hive
for more than one season- Their sting
is very painful and they are prone to
use their stings very frequently. Many
of them stinging a small animal together
may put it to death. When very aniry,
they may pursue their enemy upto a
very long distance.

The best variety of all these to
rear in scientifically constructed wooden
hives with combs resting in light wooden
frames is the Apis Indica. The other
varieties love to remain in oper air and
so cannot be kept, in closed hives* nor
do they like to stop in one place for
more than one season. Apis-dorsata,
though th<-y yield the largest quantity
of honey at a time, are very ferocious
and have never been domistieated. Only
Apis Indica bees will live in a closed
hive from year to year and work very
satisfactorily. Their natural instinct of
making parallel combs in a dark place
makes it possible for us to hive them.
The yiel 1 from a colony of these bees
properly kept may easily be twenty to
twentyiive pounds. Sometimes their
yield is very much larger anil they go
on producing such quantities of honey
fiom year to year.
