Address at Y. M. B. A.
Kalitnpong, Aug. 4
" Youth Must lie
Served ", is rntlier a tirite
saying, nevertheless, yotith-
the men and w omen
of tomorrow cannot ',bo
ignored or neglected.
On the 4th. August.
1950, Anagarika Sasana.
Katana gave a lecture in
the Dharmodaya Vihara,
Kalimpong on the 'Youth
Movement in Europe and
America'. The speaker
pointed out that views
about youth had undergone
considerable change as the
result of two major wars.
In the Victorian era the
dictum had been that
'Children should Le seen,
but not heard'. . Youth
played a great part in the
two wars, and had prov d
a vital factor—youth had
proved to be full of zeal
and energy when more
mature men and women
had flagged—youth when
not stilled had initiative
and ha I not been afraid
to accept great responsi-
bilities. Hitler it was sta-
ted had risen to power
on 'The Wings of Youth'.
Mn order to utilize these
traits ' Youth Movements'
wore developed in Europe
and America. The aim of
the Youth Movement has
been to harness the energy
of youth and to direct
it to social, recreational
antr cultural endeavours
urraeir the guidance of
experienced men and
women, keeping in mind
the importance of comra- ,
deshipand the development
of leaders from youth '
itself.
The above aims are
the goal of the Y.M.B.A.,
where cultural and educa.
t ional aspects are being
presented through the most
up-to-date medium, audio-
visual (talkies cinema), the
library and lectures by in
formed persons. Comrade-
ship and friendly inter-
course, with the develop-
ment of the 'give and take'
of life through games.
It is not b"vonrt th«
dreams of possibility that
in the not too distant
future that some youth
of Kalitnpong will be seeing
other riarts of the world,
say New York, London or
Paris, China or Japan,
through the exchange sys-
tem that is part of the
Youth Movement, whilst
Kalimpong will bo visited
by some youth from Africa,
New Zealand—But the
initiative must come from
youth. Tbe Youth of
Kalimpong is being challen-
ged, will they answer the
challenge ?
