HISTORY OF DARJEELING
N. R. MUKHERJEE
Who is to write one history of
Darjeeling ? It is a long neglected but
very important task which remains to
bo done. No peoplo can live without a
history And what we call history, is
surely by no means a l;st of kings and
queens. Daijeeling has its history in
folk tales, folk lores and proverbs of
the Rong (Lepehu) language, in the
tremendous wave of emigration from t he
west, in ihe small foundation of Realities
which started with this emigration and
in the consistent fight of humanity
against nature throughout the ages. If
the expansion of Englan 1 in the 18th
century in America, Africa and Australia
may have its history, why not a histoiy
for Darjeeling ?
In olden days, no remarkable attempt
was made to collect materials for writing
such a history. What progress was made
in this direction was too bmall and it
served the purpose of guide books in
the past, liven these guiles books are
sometimes based on such shallow expeiien-
ces that their revision will .-etve the
purpose Letter, for which i l»*v were
created.
Let us start with languages. The
lollowing Ian . . deserve s<-riom consi
deration and minule *tudy lor the collec-
tion of materials to write down our
proposed history. namely, 1) Ram

Bhutanrs". The following di!ects (8)
Tamang. (4) Mech. We have to study
the folk talis, folklores, proverb* etc in
all these language- and dilecU, so as
to and out their implications, interrela-
tions and culture.
Geographically, we can sort out
ihe names of Idealities bearing names in
dilfeient languages an I dileets. Tliii Mill
