ECHO OF THE CO-OPERATIVE
MOVEMENT

C. R. Prodhan, Secretary, Pedong
Co-operative Multipurpose Society Ltd.
Pedong.

| Echo of the Co operative movement
is Mowing hither and thither in every
comer of the Darjoeling District This
is a general symliol of inns* ;inprove.
ment economically and socially The
Co-operative movement is the movement
of tiie people, for the peopl" nnd by
the people. The success and failure of
the en operative movement stands solely
on the mass. About half a century or
more ago the Indian people suffered to
a great extent due to break of economic
condition alarmingly. This alarming con-
dition of the pecple caused ereat anxiety
to tie Government of India and they

introduced the .....operative movement

in every coniT of the country as a
relict mea-suri for the mass improvement
In Europe, tl e co operative movement " is
sponsored by the peonlt-, hut in India
due ti hackwarness of the peoole the
birth of the movement took place through
the Government.

Due to the introduction of the ci
operative n.uxement by the Government,
most of I he i eople have not yet realised
that this is their own This is one of
the loot e n ses why working of the
en opi rative society does n't show sicn
ol improvt im nt. At the outset, where
the co-operative society is formed, for
time being its working speed strikes like
a cyclonic-speed hut gradually its activi-
ties cool like boiled water, T ds kicksy-
wicksy activity revciU that members and
its leading ofh< < -bearers are lacking in
<|i>alilics of sacrifice.

In western countrie* the co-opera-
tive movement was not crowned with
success with the flow of capital only
but tin y had pati ncc a'd-will-power
•bioh made tht> movement a success.

The co-operative movement is in
the shape of a republic; its aims and
objects are not only to supply credit,
but it can take up and settle, members
minor disputes within its limited aiea
of jurisdiction bound by the by i laws
and can send up the social and economic
improvement etc.

The motto is ' Each for all and
all for each". To enrich this high prin-
cipled movement people should utilise
their intellectual power and be labourious
like a swarm of bees. The achievement
of success of the co-operative—movement
will ease the present problematic crises
of the country and bring about peaceful
living
