RELIGIOUS
RUN

W hat on earth has happened in
Kalimpong 7 One cannot wa!k doivn the
street without having papers unci pamph-
lets of all sizes, shapes and colours, thrust
into ones hands.

And what <l<> we read in these leif-
lets, so earnestly thrust upon us } Tiicy
are tracts. Kach one says that some
particular and limited interpretation of
the Christian religion is right and all the
others wrong, and these statements appear
to he hased on the shallowest criticism.

Why are we bothered by these un-
seemly bickerings t What would the
great founder of Christianity think ot it
if he could come to Kalimpong ami see
such uubrotherliness so riu>|ant V And
what must our biotheis and sisters of
the great religions of Asia think of us -

Nothing was ever proved without
demonstiation. In the Hihle, that great
guide to the Christian religion, we p ad —

' Pure religion and uiidctilcd be Imf
Cod and the Father is this. To visit the
fatherless and widows in their affliction,
and to keep himself unsppowd fi in the
world " James 1: 'Si.

And Jesus Christ himself, in his
immortal talk to the multitudes who
followed him, the talk now known to the
world as the Sermon on the IfoUQttj said
of the prophets of his time;—

"Ye shall know them by iheir
fruits. ' Matthew 7: l'i.

Not by tle ir arguments, mark you.
but by their fruits,- the effect the

.lust that. Nothing about trying to
prove, by lontroversy thai 1 am right
and you ar t wrong, ll is to the shame
of us Chris ians that this has oeeuieil
in India, 'yet us bow our heads in shame
and stop it.

Keli .iius freedom in a free country
is all very well, but one cannot think
that su.'h freedom is intended for nume-
rous small jroups of people to behave
like luusipn.nes towards all who do not
join their little sect. What seems to he
necessary in Kalimpuug is a sort of
mental flit gun'
